It must have been pretty awkward for Maurice and Elizabeth at first - but it certainly seems that they got over any embarrassments about the past pretty quickly!

As to the names of their children, as well as no 'Hugh's, I also note that there are no 'Rogers' or 'Edwards' or 'Isabellas' either. Obviously they were treading very carefully about the family past even then lol!Jules Frusherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08207281934232383811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21031350.post-61220798422746013142009-08-16T07:49:55.421-04:002009-08-16T07:49:55.421-04:00It seems Eleanor wasn't just a descendant of B...It seems Eleanor wasn't just a descendant of Berkeleys, her brother-in-law James, husband of her half sister Joan was one too!

It's no wonder given all the second marriages (and sometimes third)and intermarrying that Harry Stafford Duke of Buckingham ended up becoming his own cousin six times over !trish wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01292123010612021866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21031350.post-47454201121187986862009-08-13T17:11:12.337-04:002009-08-13T17:11:12.337-04:00Just to wrap up I've found a connection betwee...Just to wrap up I've found a connection between Liz and Mo of St Botolphs and Berkeley Square.

These Berkeleys get everywhere. Certainly by 1344 only Granada was left in Moorish hands though it took the unification of Spain under Ferdinand and Isabella to finally boot them out of Spain.

By the way were you aware that the name 'Maurice' and 'Moorish' both derive from the same etymological the latin 'maurus' used to describe the people of the ancient Mauretania, now modern day Morocco, also of the same source. Same goes for my maiden name and a dance consisting of men dressed up in hats and bells and brandishing hankies and staves.

Finally Sue, Maurice's stepgrandmother, his grandfather's second wife, was none other than Isabel de Clare daughter of Gilbert by his first wife Alice de Lusignan and consequently half sister of Eleanor de Clare, whose second husband was William de la Zouche, same family name as Eve, Maurice's mother.

Oh these second marriages, the intermarrying and the geneaological criss-crossing and matching them all up, it's worse than doing the 1000 piece jigsaw!
Pass me the valium somebody!trish wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01292123010612021866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21031350.post-40181053737408167462009-08-09T12:31:36.109-04:002009-08-09T12:31:36.109-04:00Was Maurice Berkeley's trip to Granada a crusa...Was Maurice Berkeley's trip to Granada a crusading venture, I wonder? I used to work not very far away from St Botolph in Aldersgate just the other side of St Pauls.

Some time later the company moved to the other side of the city to Aldgate whose church next door to the office and one of the most famous churches in the City, is also a St Botolph! How about that?

And how come I to know the City so well? Well the fact that Barnet (alas) now one of the outermost suburbs of London is only 30 minutes away by way of train/subway.

I've been associated with the City all my life. Any help I can give you in respect of anything to do with the City (Tower included) do let me know.

Trishtrish wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01292123010612021866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21031350.post-78540354010138339822009-08-08T11:03:24.984-04:002009-08-08T11:03:24.984-04:00Eleanor Talbot was also a blood sister (sharing a ...Eleanor Talbot was also a blood sister (sharing a common father) of Edward IV's Talbot cousins, those whose mother had been Maud Neville, first cousin of Cecily Edward's mother.
