If the man helps to pick up the pieces in time of need it doesn't seem so unreasonable that he gets the girl.

I read The Sixth Wife a while ago (review here, and found it rather strange. The fictional extramarital affair at its centre isn't convincing, but the oddest aspect is that it reads as though it could be about any three people in a love triangle in any era. I got no feel for the historical characters at all.Carlahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11901028520813891575noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21031350.post-59952829086254991362011-02-15T01:19:33.123-05:002011-02-15T01:19:33.123-05:00Kathryn, it's impressive how many managed it, ...Kathryn, it's impressive how many managed it, isn't it? I should have added Richard Wingfield (married Katherine Woodville, Duchess of Bedford and Buckingham) to the duchess-scorers!

Caroline, thanks! I'm surprised she hasn't been the subject of a novel as far as I know (unless you count her portrayal in the Susannah Dunn novel The Sixth Wife, which from what I've heard bears little resemblance to the historical Catherine Willoughby). Maybe she's considered too religious to be "sexy" to modern audiences. I thought it was a nice touch that she was buried with Bertie.

Ragged Staff, glad to hear it's being carried on!Susan Higginbothamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13517907583894026599noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21031350.post-22193568415550540132011-02-14T18:10:25.072-05:002011-02-14T18:10:25.072-05:00The current Princess Royal is proudly carrying on ...The current Princess Royal is proudly carrying on this tradition!Ragged Staffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13285451640470655380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21031350.post-68276957657735294492011-02-14T18:08:38.957-05:002011-02-14T18:08:38.957-05:00Susan, as an admirer of Catherine Willoughby, than...Susan, as an admirer of Catherine Willoughby, thanks for an awesome post! Forced to marry her guardian Charles Brandon at age 14 (when he was nearly 40 years her senior), widowed by age 25, and losing both her beloved sons at age 32- she nonetheless kept her faith and found the strength to rebuild her life. If your upcoming book isn't about her, then she deserves to be the subject of a good historical novel!Carolinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04141596690877233633noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21031350.post-6166397706169184242011-02-14T09:45:54.653-05:002011-02-14T09:45:54.653-05:00Wow, I didn't know before about all these comp...Wow, I didn't know before about all these comparatively low-born men marrying duchesses!

Love Topaz Tudor. :-)Kathryn Warnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00397714441908100576noreply@blogger.com
