Booking Through Thursday: Writing in Books

From Booking Through Thursday:

Today’s question comes from Conspiracy-Girl:
I’m still relatively new to this meme so I’m not sure if this has been asked yet, but I’m curious how many of us write notes in our books. Are you a Footprint Leaver or a Preservationist?

I was going to write that I never write in a book when I remembered that when I was in law school, I did indeed highlight and occasionally jot notes in the margins of my textbooks. But that's the only time I've ever written in a book. I like my books clean, crisp, and unmarked, thank you very much.

The law school books I wrote in, of course, were my own property. People who write in library books or in school textbooks that get handed down year after year should suffer the full rigors of a medieval traitor's death. And that fate may well be too good for them.

I wrote down in my school text books which were passed on to my brother. He loved those as he did not have to search for answers.

So many of my college texts were already marked up by the gazillion students behind me that by the time I got them, I figured what difference would it make. I couldn't afford to buy brand new texts and used ones were overpriced as it was.

I agree about the borrowed books. They should never be written in. Happy BTT.

Personally, I'd extend the traitor's death to those people who borrow my lovely new paperbacks, then bend the front cover right back while they're reading. The only time I've ever written in books was in university text books, when lots of other students had already done it, but in my own - never ever.

Hey Susan! Are you going to join in with the Advent Calendar again this year? It would be great for you to come back and add a little history. :)

I had to buy the cheapest 2nd hand textbooks. One in particular was almost entirely highlighted, in pink. Shudder. It put me off marking books for life. Sometime I use those little sticky flag sticker though.

In college I never wrote in my Latin and Greek texts because I had a formidable professor say "you must always have a pure text before you" So I wriote page numbers on the first page during all subsequent years.

But lately I have been drawing a line alongside good passages in paperbacks, using a pencil. I still don't write in hardcovers by any means.
